Circus Akimbo turns 5!

Happy days, this November Circus Akimbo celebrates 5 years of bringing circus to the local community!

In celebration, we’re hosting a giant birthday party on Saturday 10th November. Current, past and future members of Akimbo are all welcome to join in the fun. You can expect party games, cake, and of course, plenty of circus. More details will be posted here and in the Facebook event

And in the lead up to the big event, we thought we’d share a few significant moments from our history! Keep reading to find out what prompted the birth of Circus Akimbo…

Circus Akimbo: The Early Days

Circus Akimbo founder and head trainer, Claire Reincastle: “I always told my parents I wanted to join the circus. Unfortunately, growing up in Hornsby meant my options were limited to travelling an hour or more each way to attend circus classes or actually running away to join the circus. Though tempting, that didn’t seem like the best option. However, at uni I joined the circus society (SURCAS) and soon found myself immersed in the culture. Before long I was training upwards of 15 hours a week in addition to full time study, and performing with SURCAS, Circus Avalon and at events all over Sydney. I had found my place, and when I graduated I knew I wanted to give others that opportunity. I started Circus Akimbo to bring circus to Hornsby, to provide a friendly and fun space for people of all ages to experience the magical world I’d discovered.”

Circus Akimbo was officially registered on 9th November, 2013, and began with just one weekly class at Asquith Community Centre in January 2014. The photos below are a selection from the first year.

After a successful first year, we moved into our current studio at the end of 2014. Stay tuned for the next part of this series: Jersey St and beyond!
